Advent talks 2013
All are welcome this Advent to our continuing series of lunchtime talks, on Wednesdays 4th, 11th and 18th December. This year our own minister, Revd Christopher Humble, will lead on the theme of Expecting Christ. Each session will include a presentation and time for discussion as we explore moments in our lives when Christ might meet us – not just at Advent or Christmas.
Presentations begin at 12.45 and light lunches will be available from 11.45.
Central Celebration
We’re so delighted with our growing partnership with the congregations of St Michael-le-Belfrey that we think it’s time to celebrate it in worship (and lunch!) together. This is happening next week on Sunday 17 November.
We start off the celebrations with a lunch at 12.30pm in our halls. Please bring your own savoury food, we will be providing drinks and cake.
Then at around 2.30pm we will meet together in the chapel for a great service celebrating all that God is doing across our multiple congregations. There will be groups for our young people meeting at the same time.
Neither Central nor St Michael-le-Belfrey will be holding any other services on that day so please make a special effort to join us for this one!
Here is the Belfrey’s video about the event:
A Different Drum
Riding Lights are bringing their tremendous theatre to Central once again at 7.30pm this coming Saturday, 2nd November, to finish the national tour of ‘A Different Drum’.
small stories to change a troubled world
In the blood of a flea, wrapped in a bundle of French silk, the plague arrives in the Derbyshire village of Eyam. With it comes a devastating decision. As the entire community chooses the bold path of sacrifice… they begin to march to the sound of a different drum.
Beginning in the 17th century the play follows a thread through history to the present day, picking up accounts of other men and women who dare to break the boundaries of self-interest. Beating with a heart of resistance and selflessness these are stories of individuals who set out in hope and discover their potential for remarkable love in action.
Full of life and colourful music, a different drum imagines how different the world could be if we responded unswervingly to the golden rule – ‘do unto others as you would have them do to you.’
Tickets are available and you can buy them via the Riding Lights website. You can also buy tickets by phoning the Riding Lights box office on (01904) 613000 – which avoids the transaction charge applied for booking online.
Lübeck boys’ choir concert
On Saturday, 5th October at 4.30pm there will be a concert at Central given by the boys’ choir of St Mary’s, Lübeck (Germany) as part of their UK tour. Following their appearance at Central they will be going on to perform in concerts and worship in a number of other venues around the country, including the cathedrals of Bristol and Coventry.
The history of a boys’ choir singing at St Mary’s, Lübeck, goes back to the seventeenth century and in its current incarnation the choir is celebrating its 65th anniversary. They will be singing a variety of sacred music dating from the sixteenth century to the present day.
Admission is free.
